When you need a roadworthy
In Victoria a roadworthy certificate is required when you sell a registered vehicle, transfer registration to a new owner, re-register a previously unregistered vehicle, or clear a vehicle defect notice. The certificate is valid for 30 days from the date of issue. A roadworthy is a minimum safety check, not a comprehensive mechanical inspection.
What we check
The roadworthy standard covers wheels and tyres, steering, suspension, braking system, seating and seatbelts, lights and reflectors, windscreen and windows, the body and chassis, and other safety related items such as the exhaust and fuel system. We do not assess engine condition, paintwork, transmission smoothness or fuel economy. Those are buyer concerns, not roadworthy items.
If the car fails
If your vehicle does not pass, we give you a written list of the items that need attention and a quote to repair them. You can choose to have us do the work or take the vehicle elsewhere. If we do the work, we re-test at no additional charge. Common reasons cars fail include worn tyres, perished wiper blades, blown bulbs, cracked windscreens, oil leaks dripping onto the road, worn brake components and worn suspension bushes.
Pre-purchase inspections
If you are thinking of buying a used car and want more than a roadworthy, ask us about a pre-purchase inspection. We do a deeper mechanical check, road test, and scan all modules for hidden fault history, and give you a written report you can use to negotiate or walk away.
Booking
Most roadworthys are booked same week. Drop off in the morning and we usually have it tested and reported by mid afternoon. If repairs are needed and parts are in stock we can often have it certified the same day.
